Surfaces judged the way a clay modeller judges them

I am Nick Graveley. I build Sub-D surfaces for motorcycles and cars: bodywork and concept volumes, modelled at 1:1 scale in Gravity Sketch. I spent over two decades hand-sculpting full-size models in clay, so I read a highlight line the way a clay modeller does. Your designer and I can stand inside the same model in VR, from different countries, and decide on it together.

What you get

  • OBJ and FBX meshes of the concept surfaces.
  • Alias-ready surfaces, structured so an Alias team can rebuild them.
  • Renders and turntables for reviews and presentations.

The Sub-D models are highly controlled and highlight-clean, which gives downstream surfacing a much clearer starting point than a model derived from 2D sketches.

How it works

  1. You send a sketch, a brief or a half-formed instinct.
  2. We model it in VR and review it with your team at full scale.
  3. You get the surfaces back in the formats above.

The Brixton Storr 500 concept beside its clay model

Proof · Brixton Storr 500

The Storr 500 that debuted at EICMA 2022 was modelled to about ninety per cent in VR, finished in clay by hand, and went into production as the Brixton Crossfire 500 Storr.

Common questions

  • What do I receive from a SubD surface modelling job? +

OBJ and FBX meshes, Alias-ready surfaces structured so an Alias team can rebuild them, and renders and turntables.

  • Do you deliver STEP or IGES files? +

No. The deliverables are OBJ / FBX meshes and Alias-ready surfaces, with renders and turntables.

  • Is SubD only good for rough concept blocking? +

No. In skilled hands Sub-D is a surfacing tool: the result is a controlled, highlight-clean surface model that meets the aesthetic and technical brief.

  • Can we work remotely? +

Yes. Your designer and I work the same full-scale model together in real time from different countries. The Brixton Storr 500 was developed this way, with the designer in Austria and the modeller in Germany.

  • Where are you based? +

Devon, UK. I work with clients worldwide.
